Draft Edge Fantasy Football

Customer Review: do not waste your money.
like I did. I am passionate about fantasy and am furious I wasted hard earned cash on this game. don't make the same mistake I did.
Customer Review: Needs lots of work
About the only useful thing with the software is that it will generate a moderately useful cheat sheet list of positions based on a fairly flexible scoring system. But beware of all of the following: - The up to date stats are not truly up to date. I still have an RB who is out for the season showing up as #25 on the RB list - There is no information on defenses / special teams whatsoever - The cheat sheets only show rank, name, and team name. No other information is available such as score used to create the ranking and there is no ability to customize the cheat sheets once created - The functionality is programed very basically with many usability problems including the ability to even maximize the window beyond 800x600 to show all of the information at once without having to scroll the window - The draft tool cannot be saved mid-draft

The Soul Calibur series has always been at the forefront of the beat 'em up market. Since the original version of the game erupted onto the scene in the late nineties (named Soul Blade), the franchise has grown in renown and popularity. Introducing a varied range of fighters and dynamic weapon-play, the Soul series of games have always prided themselves on delivering a rich gaming experience, taking the static nature of the beat 'em up genre and crafting it into a more rounded gaming experience.

Soul Calibur IV is the first of the Soul series to reach next gen platforms, appearing on both the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. One of the most eagerly anticipated titles of 2008, Soul Calibur IV had the weight of expectation of its back, especially with Playstation 3 fans, as it is the first real beat 'em up to be released for the console. Soul Calibur III, whilst maintaining a rich and detailed gaming ethos, was viewed by most as a miss-step in the series, overcomplicating game play and deviating from a much-loved combat engine.

Thankfully, and as promised, Soul Cailbur IV rectifies this mistake and pushes its way triumphantly to the head of beat 'em ups one again. Whilst technically the game offers little in originality, this is really the point. Fans demanded a return to the classic style of the franchise and that's what they got. Of course, being a next-gen title does bring massive advantages with it. Game play is fluid and more natural than ever before, with character models moving and reacting with a realism that borders on astonishing at times.

Soul Calibur's crux has always been the motley band of fighters that appear to wrestle for control of the soul swords, and in next-gen presentation the characters are truly gorgeous. From intricate facial expressions and motion capture, to dizzying attention to detail (polished armour will change each bout to reflect the relating background); Soul Calibur IV is truly a delight to behold.

Gameplay returns with the usual plethora of additional content. Tower of Lost Souls will test your skill and endurance as you take on constant combatants without a health replenish, and for the first time ever Soul Calibur goes online, allowing players to combat each other across the world and earn respect on a global scale! A few new in-game functions have also been added, most notably the Soul Gauges and Critical Finishes, which act as instant winners you can punish an enemy with if they block too often.

Special mention must go to the Character Creation mode, which returns from Soul Calibur III with a massive revamp. Whilst the range of different styles has been scrapped, this makes way for a function so in depth it is addictive enough to lose hours of your day to. The smallest details are accounted for; you can even alter the pitch of your character's voice. With a gargantuan range of equipment available and even more to unlock, players can create truly unique characters. The most impressive thing is that, whilst on past games character creation was fun, the end result would never gel with the characters proper and appeared almost as superimposed sprites on the screen. With Soul Calibur IV, the characters you create are so detailed and well developed that they could have been made by the games designers themselves, and appear no less impressive than the real characters of the game.

There are few downsides to report, but a few niggling factors emerge in the game. The Story mode seems less rich than in previous instalments, and there is less of an overall narrative to the proceedings which used to give the story distance, you felt you really were travelling the world in search of your goal. Also, using the in-game graphics for the character endings is adequate; however with next-gen consoles surely the ability to give us full CGI endings isn't too much to ask?

Overall however, Soul Calibur IV is a raging success, doing exactly what it says on the tin, and then some. A beat 'em up has never looked so attractive, and the game offers enough challenge to keep players hooked way past the usual parameters for a game of this genre.

When the Nintendo Wii came out a little over a year ago, Nintendo took a large gamble on appealing to the casual gaming audience. Now, after 22 million units sold, Nintendo is looking to get more people off of the couch and into simple interactive gaming. Enter "Wii Fit," Nintendo's newest game that is based around Health and Fitness.

What's the cost?

The cost of entry is a little steep by gaming standards. It costs $89.99 retail for the balance board and the Wii Fit game bundled together. Overall though, you get your money's worth as you will see. Due to the immense popularity of Wii Fit, retail stores have sold out all across the United States. As such, many are being listed on Ebay. In my opinion, anything under $120 (with shipping including of course) is still worth the price if you cannot find the game in your area.

What's included in the Wii Fit package?

Upon opening my package I found the following:

1 Wii Fit Wireless Balance Board, capable of withstanding 330lbs of weight

4 AA batteries

Wii Fit Balance Board Instruction Manual

Wii Fit Game with instruction manual

4 Balance Board Extensions (for use on thick carpets)

Is it easy to use?

Yes! Pretty much install the batteries, flip the board over and follow the instructions to "Sync" the wireless Wii Fit balance board to your Wii. Once that is done, the game pretty much takes you through setting up your profile by Weighing you, calculating your BMI and measuring your balance. This provides a starting point where you can then set a goal (2 weeks or 1 month) for lowering your weight. The entire process took 5 minutes.

What about the games, are they fun?

Not all of the games are available at the beginning. There are basic exercises like Yoga poses and Push-ups. Then there are aerobic exercises like Jogging and Hula-hooping. Finally, there are balance exercises like Skiing and Tight-Rope walking. Each minute you spend working out in Wii Fit nets you a Wii Fit Cash, which is used to unlock more exercises and games. In the hour of total time I played Wii-Fit, I unlocked 6 new activities. As you get better at each activity, new options open such as new running trails or multiple hula-hooping. There is even a step-aerobics class in the game.

My favorites so far are the Running trails on the island (good calorie burners, really make you work up a sweat if you do it right) and Hula-hooping which surprisingly works your abs pretty well if you do 3 rounds in a row. I'm having fun with it so far and I like how it tracks your progress!

What about the Wii Fit Balance Board, is it accurate?

If you stick to the instructions and let the board calibrate, it is VERY sensitive and accurate. It tracks all of your push-ups and leg lifts all while providing real-time balance information on screen. Balance is important in Wii Fit because it improves posture and somewhat teaches good form on doing exercises. Hula-hooping works almost exactly how it would in real life. Running is tracked by the Wii-mote only but also allows for 2 players to run at the same time. You can place the wii-mote in your hand and run, but you can also place it in your pocket and it will track your steps. After 2 minutes of running, you get your rhythm down and can pace yourself pretty well. Overall, I'm impressed with the motion tracking. It's much much better than when the Wii First game out (WarioWare anyone?)

What is Wii Fit's Learning Curve?

I really believe that Wii Fit can be used by everyone. I think even a 5 year old could pick up the activities. People who are morbidly obese (BMI >40 ) should start out lightly with the beginner exercises to gauge their comfort level, however most overweight people should be able to get off the couch and jump right in to Wii Fit. The software is designed so anyone can pick it up and play, even non-gamers.

Wii Fit for Weight Loss?

Knowing what I do now from my 4 years of medical school, theoretically if you spend an hour a day with Wii-Fit, you will see some weight loss if you follow a normal diet. However the proof is in the pudding and I won't pass judgement until a month from now when I re-weigh myself. I am absolving myself to lose 20lbs of "Medical school weight gain" in this next month before starting residency. Everything will be tracked with Wii Fit.

Where can I buy Wii Fit?

You can buy Wii fit in any retail outlet store or your local Gamestop store. Alternatively, if your area is sold out you can try Ebay to find a unit. The average running price as of May 25th was $135.

Online gaming is one of the fastest growing trends in the world right now. With games such as Runescape boasting subscriber numbers of around a million and World of Warcraft exceeding 7 million active members, the total number of MMOG subscriptions is verging on the absurd, quickly approaching the 14 million mark worldwide[6/06, mmogchart.com]. This tremendous growth in the popularity of the online gaming industry has, in part, been fueled by the accessibility of high-speed broadband internet. A high-speed connection allows for a much more enjoyable game-play experience. Everyone knows that online games work exceptionally well on DSL and Cable internet connections, but what about the newer high-speed service satellite internet? As satellite internet is becoming more readily available and cost effective more and more rural dial-up customers are making the switch to cash in on the faster speeds and always on access. But, when it comes to online gaming many are concerned that their game-play experience will be less satisfactory, if they can even connect to play at all.

The reason for this concern is the issue of latency. Latency is an expression of how much time it takes for a packet of data to get from one designated point to another. This is direly important when it come to on-line gaming in that latency translates into the time that it takes from the moment that a button is pushed to when the action is performed in the game. Often this can mean the difference between life and death. With DSL and Cable the response time is almost immediate, being between 50milliseconds-150milliseconds. The latency for satellite internet is between 600milliseconds-800milliseconds. This may sound like the end of online gaming for someone who has just made the switch to satellite internet but it is not. Although this degree of latency does all but rule out first-person shooters there are a good number of MMOGs that operate well over a satellite internet connection. And, although the effects of latency can never be completely eliminated, there are ways in which to improve upon them. The simplest way to do this is by speeding up the way that ones computer handles and responds to information being transferred through the connection and by increasing the total amount of available bandwidth. Some operating systems have built in reserves on bandwidth that are non-essential to the functionality of most web applications, see link for a tweak http://www.wildblue.cc/wbforums/showthread.php?t=3323 .

By eliminating non-essential services i.e. bandwidth hogs that the average user never utilizes and dedicating more physical resources to the most used application can help tremendously. Minimizing the effects of latency down to the bare minimum allowed by the laws of physics enables one to play more online gaming that was before not workable and also speeds up the responses of other games that already do work. So, although there are limitations to on-line gaming over satellite internet there are also ways to improve upon game-play responsiveness and many games that will play well without operating system tweaks. Below is a list of online games for both console and PC that, according to subscribers that have tested and played them, do and do not work over satellite internet. This is not a definitive list of games guaranteed to work, so be cautious as results may vary.

Oh My God! Its official. Well, at least its unofficially official. I have a disorder. Im a junkie. Its called Caribbean Obsession Disorder (COD) and its described as

an uncharacteristically and sometimes irresponsibly compelling drive to seek out sensory indulgence identified with the Caribbean culture - including music, scenery, fashion, food and habitat. Often accompanied by alcohol and other substance use, social and/or career lethargy, disregard for authority and rebellious (antisocial) behaviors against provincial standards and ideals.

Theres more explanation for this disorder, but I think you get the picture.

I suppose its not surprising that someone actually has a name for this state of mind, after all our culture is obsessed with pigeon-holing EVERYTHING. But it is ironic that it is considered a disorder. Why couldnt it be called Caribbean Delight Affinity, or Stress Management Through Caribbean Meditations? Ah well, whatever you call it, I have it. I display all the symptoms, most notably the rebellious (antisocial) behaviors against provincial standards and ideals.

I think about the Caribbean constantly, I design my life around getting my next fix, and I experience serious mood swings and irritation if I am deprived from breathing that magnificent air for more than a month or two. My heroes are Earnest Hemingway and Jimmy Buffet.

I spend so much time cruising in the Caribbean that some of my friends are starting to have conversations about me that include phrases like running away from reality and just wont grow up, and cant seem to hold down a real job. About the only people I know that dont see anything weird about being addicted to spending beautiful luxurious days plowing the blue waters of the Caribbean are teenagers, romance novelists and a couple of aging explorers I met in Nassau who were pirates born 200 years too late.

Oh sure, lots of people LIKE the idea of cruising the Caribbean. Whats not to like? But, most grown-ups relegate it to a tiny slice of life, something that one does only when the important stuff is under control. A tiny little carrot that dangles tantalizingly from the sticks of careers and mortgages and responsibilities. Perish the thought that cruising itself could be important, or that it could make people more productive, or better parents or better members of society. Thats just not realistic! Well, I beg to differ.

You know, it wasnt that long ago that responsible adults shook their heads in dismay at the number of kids wasting their time skateboarding on those plywood half-pikes that cropped up all over the place. Of course, that was pre-1995, before the massive financial windfall of the X-Games, where today, those very same kids command million-dollar endorsement fees and light up ESPN with their extraordinary aerial acrobatics.

In 1990, Kimberly and John Puckett took a backpacking vacation into the Alaskan wilderness and while drinking in the sensational view from atop Sable Mountain they conceived of the idea of creating a specialty coffee house patterned after ski lodges and Alaskan cabins. That Aha! moment, which was made possible because they indulged their fascination of wild and woolly nature, has grown into Caribou Coffee, the 2nd largest coffee chain in the US (Starbucks is first).

Reaching back in history a bit, we can remember the story of a young cartoonist who envisioned a world where cartoon characters could be brought to life in a fantasy environment of sheer child-hood delight. Walt Disneys efforts to build Disneyland were ridiculed and criticized for years, even to the degree that his immediate family worried that he might have lost his grip on reality.

Well, seems to me that we could use a bit more of that flight from reality. And it also seems to me that gazing blissfully at a priceless Caribbean sunset is a fantastic vehicle in which to take that flight. What if the best way get in touch with the real meat of life is to remove oneself from the travails and pressure of that life. What if the perfect incubator for creating solutions and ideas to address vexing problems was the deck of a cruise ship, or a sandy white beach? I think we are missing the boat with regards to cruising in the Caribbean. Rather than dismissing it as an anti-social disorder, we should celebrate it as an essential activity that spawns true genius.

And in that vein, fellow adventurers, I proudly don the label of COD, and pledge myself to discovering and reporting back to the imprisoned masses, the magic of Caribbean waters, and sunsets and all that other wonderfully indulgent stuff. And more that that, I invite you to cast of the dispersions and judgments of those timid souls who measure the quality of their lives in terms of how big their car payment is or the square footage of their houses or how predictable their lives have become.

Yeah, its not always easy. Family and friends will wonder about your crisis of identity, employers will fret over your laid-back demeanor and credit card companies will scratch their heads in bewilderment that you refuse to be shackled by the gods of debt and credit ratings. It wont be easy, at least to start. But heres what youll get in exchange:

Delightful moments, sometimes whole days of delightful moments, where the only stress is making sure the SPF of your sunscreen allows you to get a great tan.

Beautiful blue water, majestic seas, lazy skies, and visual experiences that bury themselves deep in your soul rather than smog, pollution, stress, traffic, alarm clocks, beepers, ringing telephones, blinking computers, packed schedules, mindless news about the latest self-destructive celebrity and obscene political commercials 24-7.

Somebody else waits on you hand and foot (for a change).

A menu of adventures and experiences that you wont have, or wont have time for, in your current life. Things like diving, horseback riding, swimming with sting rays or dolphins, four-wheel drive explorations of rain forests and ancient ruins, parasailing.

Youll meet people that dont want anything from you other than to make your acquaintance and maybe share a Corona.

Romance, intimacy and sex. Of course, it helps if you take someone along thats already comfortable getting naked with you, but some great love stories have written their opening chapter against the enchanted backdrop of Caribbean sunsets. (Its also been reported that a Caribbean cruise is 97% more effective than prescription drugs for erectile oh, maybe thats too much information for some. But, the side effects are all good.)

Youll see things, and learn things, that will never get on your radar screen while slaving away in the Monday - thru Friday world of car pools, office politics and soccer practice.

Youll discover a new meaning for alone time. Its the kind of time that sits outside the pace of life, that defies logic, that lets you get in touch with the piece of yourself that lies slumbering inside you. Youll have thoughts that surprise and delight you, and youll tickle your fantasies in ways that you havent tickled them since you were a kid.

Now, I ask you. How could ANY of that be a bad thing? C,mon, its time to trade in some of those other disorders youve got for one that really rocks! Get COD!

Happy Cruising!

So you've been playing through your Real-Time Strategy games and are starting to get bored with the same thing over and over. You want something bigger, better, more complex. Well, Gas Powered Games has given us Supreme Commander, an RTS of unprecedented scale. And I mean enormous; you don't make a base of a few buildings, you use dozens, and hundreds more in resources farms. You don't build a couple tanks and send them to wipe out the enemy. You build strategic missiles and long-range artillery to soften up the enemy, then move your army of 200 units into their base. Supreme Commander (popularly called SupCom) is unbelievably large, and sets a new standard for RTS.

The story takes place in 3844 A.D., after humans have colonized much of the galaxy. After several events, three factions emerge: the United Earth Federation, trying to restore order to the galaxy; the Cybran nation, a group of human-AI cyborgs trying to liberate their brethren; and the Aeon Illuminate, humans taught "The Way" by an alien race and trying to spread their beliefs throughout the rest of mankind. You start in any battle with an Armored Command Unit or ACU. This is the base unit, and allows you to begin construction of all other units and buildings.

The ACU is supported by engineers, who can build more buildings but at a slower pace. Air, land, and naval factories produce units, while mass extractors and power generators produce resources. Mass is used in the building process, and energy is used to run buildings and units. Resources are stockpiled in storage, but if you run out, you don't stop building. The more resources you use that you don't actually have, the slower you produce units and buildings. Factories can be upgraded from Tech 1 to Techs 2 and 3, allowing production of better units and better engineers, who can build higher level buildings.

Overall, each faction can produce around 30-40 different unit types and around the same number of different buildings. At a low level, each faction's units perform about the same, but at the higher levels they diversify. Each faction also gets three unique experimental units which can easily turn the tide of battle, but are very expensive to produce.

SupCom's single-player campaign gives each of the three factions six missions. While it doesn't seem like much, each mission expands several times, and can last several hours. In the first few, the player is confined to low level units, which can prove quite boring. The only way to defeat your enemy is to build large numbers of units and continually throw them at the enemy. In the last two missions, you gain access to Tech 3 units and buildings, allowing you to come up with your own strategies. The skirmish and multiplayer modes make up for this, with many maps and options to play with. The maps range in size from 5km x 5km to 81km x 81km. The largest maps are perhaps the biggest even seen in RTS, and can take many hours to complete. SupCom also has in all probability the most nuclear explosions per round in any game. To win, you must destroy the enemy's ACU, which explodes in a nuclear fashion. Nuclear missiles are also the best way to destroy the enemy's base. However, every attack has a defense, and nuclear missiles can be stopped.

So, if you are experienced with RTS's and are looking for something more, check out Supreme Commander. It does have a steep learning curve, so I would only recommend it for experienced players. The scale is enormous, and allows players to come up with multiple strategies so that no game ever plays the same way. For those tired of traditional RTS's, SupCom brings a whole new definition and level of play.

Boombox 2 is a puzzler somewhere near Tetris but closer to super bubble pop. You fire blocks from your cannon at the bottom to connect to the blocks at the top of the screen. Once four blocks are connected they burst and clear from the screen. The added strategy comes in the form of power ups. Power ups occasionally fall from blocks as they explode. The game comes equipped with two different modes one arcade and one story. The only difference is in story mode the goal is to clear the screen and in arcade mode the screen keeps coming down. You lose when the blocks from the top cross your line at the bottom. The line isn't necessarily at the bottom, it's a little above your actual gun so you have a little breathing room.

Overall

Boombox 2 is a very fun game but only in small spurts. The game doesn't reach too far away from its roots. You shoot the blocks they blow up and repeat. This shallow play will only hold your attention for but so long. On top of being a good looking game the music suits the game well and the sound fx are great. Minor tweaks would have made this game a huge hit. Perhaps a change in scenery or a higher reward yield for gaining levels and Boombox 2 would have been a must play. If you're looking for a good time waster in between work or just a quick break Boombox 2 is the route to go.
